Refried Black Eyed Peas

I had black-eyed peas in the freezer that we needed to use up when we defrosted it, so I decided to turn them into refried beans. They came out perfectly.

1-2 Tbsp olive oil, bacon fat, or lard
1/4 cup chopped onion
2 cups cooked black-eyed peas, with some cooking water
2 tsp ground cumin
2 tsp garlic powder or 2 cloves minced garlic
salt to taste

Saute onion in oil or fat until it softens and begins to brown. Add peas and spices. Stir, mashing beans with the spoon. Cook over medium-low heat until beans are soft and hot and start to bubble, about 10 minutes.
